For nine months each year our feral friends do their best to sustain their species. This means that there are lots and lots of kittens born in the wild. A female cat will have up to three litters each year. With a gestation period of 5 weeks, this can make for a really long summer. The mortality rate for kittens born in the wild is about 67%. The mom cat will expend an unbelievable amount of energy trying to care for her babies.
Once we trap the mom cats we need to take care of the babies. Sometimes they are too old, or too wild and can’t be tamed. But sometimes they can~ and here is where our kitten program steps in~
If the kitten needs to keep on nursing- this is a kitten under 6 weeks of age, then we place the kittens and their mom in a foster home, or our facility until the kittens can be weaned and the mom can be spayed and returned to her colony. Kittens over 6 weeks who are weaned need to be held until they can be altered, vaccinated and tested for disease. Then they can be moved into our adoption program.

Some kittens are taught extremely well by their moms to be wary of humans. These kittens still see humans as predators and will fight to survive. The process of socialization is one which requires great patience and no ego. With babies we try to socialize even the wildest, most scared kittens. Kittens under 8 weeks can usually be socialized just be lots of handling and exposure to gentle humans. Kittens between 8 and 12 weeks require more work and there is a process that works quite well if someone has the time and patience to give. Kittens over 12 weeks exhibiting strong resistance to human contact are often better off being altered and released back to their colonies.

Once our kittens are socialized, spayed/neutered, vaccinated and tested they are ready to find their forever homes. We adopt our kittens out through the All The Best Pet Care stores on Queen Anne, Mercer Island and Madison Park. We also hold adoptathons 2-3 Saturdays each month.
